SENIOR DISCOUNTS: STATE/ COUNTY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

BY SIMONE GRAHAM – Editor HDG: October 1st – February 10th TO SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR PROPERTY TAX ASSISTANCE

This is a state program from California State Controller’s Office for qualified lower income seniors to pay current residential property taxes. There is a 7% interest rate on these ‘postponed’ taxes’. Check the website for the rest of the details. For questions you may have after reading the information here, contact the Controller’s team at (800) 952-5661 or postponement@sco.ca.gov . Back taxes are not covered under this program, only the current year.  A reverse mortgage disqualifies you. Applications are processed in the order received, so get yours in early as funds are limited; that is, the PTP fund can run out of money even if you are qualified to receive assistance.

Requirements:

  • 62 years of age, blind, or have a disability
  • Own and occupy the home as your primary place of residence
  • Have a total household income of $35,500 or less
  • Have at least 40% equity in the property, and
  • Other requirements

See www.mytaxcollector.com and click on ‘Property Tax Postponement’ to read the flyer in English, Spanish, Chinese, or Tagalog. Click on ‘Applications’ and type up your application before printing.

The tax assessor’s office in the county offices at the Hesperia Civic Center has flyers at the front desk with this information. However, the desk attendants did not have any more to share on the subject. Your best bet for more information is to access the link and phone number above.
